Most people who wind coils for tattoo machines use a tool to guide the wire and keep it from skipping. I've seen guitar picks, hotel room keys, plastic razor blades and many other materials being used. I've tried as many as I could get my hands on and what I found that worked the best is the vulcanized fiber we use for coil washers. It is stiff enough, still has some flex and wont scratch the enamel off the magnet wire. Once I found the correct thickness and made a handle for ease and comfort, it was a game changer.
